They knew it was going to be big, but THIS big??? Then they realise they've barely scratched the surface. There's a lot more to see and do (and a lot more walking) in the city.

The consensus this year is that the city was a little subdued, and we'd have to agree. There didn't seem to be that persistent urge to keep going, going because you were going to miss something. This was partly to do with the fact there were less installations and satellite shows but also because they seem slightly more organised in geographical clusters than ever before. Brera, Tortona and the increasingly commercial Lambrate areas seemed to contain the vast majority of the action, saving on shoe leather.

In Brera, designjunction presented EDIT in the impressive Pelota space. A collection that could (mostly) be summed up as "Brits Abroad" it proved designjunction is a serious player and not just in the London design scene. A shot across the bow for their LDF rivals, and a taster of what's to come at The Sorting Office in September, EDIT was a relaxed atmosphere with a diverse group of exhibitors.

Around the corner, Dilmos gallery presented Glassworks by Nendo. Thoughtful and as minimal as you would expect from the prolific design studio, the exhibition presented Nendo products for brands such as Glas Italia, Baccarat and Lasvit alongside custom glass vessels.
Brands including Lensvelt, Resident from New Zealand ans Sander Mulder spread out across this sprawling campus and found their own niches amongst the steam trains and ships. A hugely impressive space, it stole the show with Lensvelt with Studio Job the only exhibitor to stage a presentation capable of competing with the space.
Finally to Lambrate, which was conceived a few short years ago as a mix of experimental young designers, design schools and young brands and now suddenly there are also more established companies hoping the cool would rub off on them. Rumours that young designers are already being priced out of the area are worrying. Where is left for them to go?
Studio WM from Rotterdam presented Reflecting In Colour, a series of lights and tables with soft subtle colour gradients.

Zeitraum always hold back a little bit of their News for the Salone Internazionale del Mobile and this year was no exception - a new bed, a new bench and a new light all debuted this week in Milan.

MIUT is a new box-spring bed system by Julia Fellner with a tremendous amount of options. A combination of technology, comfort and quality construction, MIUT is suitable for both domestic and contract environments. The box contains 250 individually wrapped pocket springs per square metre and the height above the floor allows for easy maintenance.
MIUT Basic is as simple a it sounds - just the box frame and mattress in the fabric or leather of your choice in all the standard sizes you would expect. From there you can get creative - MIUT Comfort adds a tapering headboard to the basic version. MIUT Panel is available in natural oak or the new stain colours and in 2 heights. The geometric grid of the panel determines the positioning of 6 optional storage "boxes" - open boxes, drawers or shelves. These boxes can themselves be in natural oak, stained to match the panel or to alternatively stained to contrast the panel itself.

See? A lot of options to choose from ensuring each MIUT is unique. MIUT will be available in September 2013.

In the above image, you can see the new NOON 1 SMALL pendant light with black textile cable, conceived as a simple bedside companion to MIUT, but work equally as well over a bistro dining table.

E8 Bench by Mathias Hahn is a companion to the E8 Table launched at IMM Cologne. The table was shown in Milan in its original zinc yellow finish and the new benches are available with a simple oak seat or with a discreet upholstered pad. Available in sizes that correspond with the table, there is a pleasant simplicity to the benches that make them ideal for modern, casual dining.
So we're back from a long week roaming the halls of the Fiera and the cobbled streets of Milan and now we're gathering our thoughts. What did we think of this years design extravaganza?

Budri Italian marble inlay

Overall, the Fiera itself felt quieter than usual. Perhaps the Euro crisis is finally catching up with the Italian producers, but there seemed to be less bluster, less pizazz than normal and visitor numbers seemed to be down. Of course, this is based solely on the fact it was easier to walk through the aisles without meeting a traffic jam, and not on official figures, so it will be interesting to hear what the organisers have to say. The perceived reduction in visitors made for a more pleasant experience - you could actually stop, look and try the new products on offer.

The colour palette was fresh and light on the whole with zingy bursts of pinks, blues, yellows and the occasional orange on white or pale grey backgrounds. Light woods, brass, copper, marble and gradients appear to be the finishes of the moment.
Amidst the ubiquitous names of Urquiola, Bouroullec, Nendo, Starck et al a new name emerged - Sebastian Herkner. Slowly building his name for the last few years, this feels like the year he finally broke through. His Bell table, while not new, was much lusted after and the new Bell lights (both for ClassiCon) struck a fine balance between function and aesthetics. In the city you could find his marble and copper Salute side tables for La Chance. Watch him become a design star.

Moroso is always a bellwether of the state of design. Without a shadow of a doubt, the biggest thing to emerge from Stockholm Design Week this year was Note Design Studio. Slowly building their reputation over the last few years by staging their own Marginal Notes shows, this year they moved to an old light bulb factory and presented Note Open - a temporary studio and exhibition space .

We brought some friends with us to Stockholm this year and were ever so slightly excited to for all of us to have guided tour by Susanna and Cristiano, two fifths of Note. They had 8 new products on show, as well as pieces from previous Marginal Notes and their Bolt stool for new French brand La Chance (which just happens to have been awarded a Wallpaper* Design Award 2013).
Products ranged from lights - we may have mentioned the new Vinge for Örsjö once or twice before - to bike stands and bathroom sinks and even a prototype Boet bench for Mitab to accompany the Boet stool. The prototype was so new, it arrived just in time for the opening of the show, but too late for the brochure, so the image below will have to do for now.
Susanna is actually from the town of Örsjö and her family have a long history with Örsjö Belysning, so it seems fitting Note should design a piece for the brand. Apart from the exhibition, Note's handiwork was in evidence all over the city - Vinge and their Teluria candelabra for Klong popped up at Glass Elephant, they not only designed the products but also the stand for ZilenZio (above) and they designed the Greenhouse exhibition. The layout for Greenhouse was based on baroque French gardens and instead of straight rows of boxy stands, rows were curved and some walls were removed to create an open atmosphere, where designers could meet and experience the show around them, rather than feeling they had to stay in their designated box. It also removed the intimidation visitors sometimes feel about stepping onto stands - they were on the stands before they even knew.
The bull of "Bull in a china shop" shop fame morphs into an elephant in the Swedish equivalent of the phrase. This impressive installation installation in the caves of Skeppsholmen island featured glass works being manipulated by sophisticated robots from ABB. Mixing crafts with industrial design and technology, the exhibition sought to "explore the characteristics of glass as material and muse, and tells a story about the meeting of contrasts". Plus these robots were far more engaging than the robots in Trafalgar Square for LDF 2010.

Mitab presented a new stand concept at the Stockholm Furniture Fair 2 weeks ago (how time flies). A variation on their successful "Stand On Your Own" concept, MiStand sees the responsibility passed to a young architect or designer to present their perception of the brand. This year, Jonas Wagell was selected and he responded in his characteristically colourful way. Primary colours sprang out from a soft grey background, catching your eye and attention.
A long time collaborator with Mitab (his products include Tweed, Shadow and Anywhere) Mute is a companion piece to the Stereo sofa. Featuring the same distinctive Button detail, Mute is a high back sofa for modern working. A private hub without the expense or restraints of partition walls! Mute is available as a 1, 2 or 3 seater with frame colour and upholstery of your choice.
This time last year we said you should keep an eye on Note Design Studio, as their reputation was spreading fast. Twelve months later, they have designed the intriguing Vinge for Örsjö. Translating as "Wing", the solid brass vinge sits beneath a mouth-blown opal glass dome and rotates 180°, acting as a dimmer.

The simple exterior emphasises the wing and the sweeping movement of the wing directly affecting the light demonstrates Note's playful attitude.

Available with black, white or red base, the wing can be ordered in a subtle matt brass finish, or powder-coated steel to match the base.

Jonas Bohlin is a long time collaborator with Örsjö. They have worked together on many bespoke pieces for his interior design projects, as well as pieces like Kvist in his signature raw copper. In 2012, Bohlin was commissioned to refurbish the interiors of Stadshuskӓllaren, the restaurant in Stockholm's City Hall and famous as the location of the Nobel Prize award dinners. A listed building, it was a tricky commission, but by working with selected craftspeople, he has brought the glamour and splendour back to this landmark.
He even created a "reverse Kvist" floorlight, with branches sheltering the tables.

Overall, the theme of the stand for the Fair was brass, with old and new items shown for the first time in a beautifully soft matt brass finish - brushed and finished with a clear lacquer. A chance to get exposure and perhaps even get picked up by a manufacturer, it is always a well curated, simple white zone that allows the design to speak for itself. The surprising thing this year was just how many of the pieces we had seen before (not that we weren't pleased to see them again) - has the cult of "star designers" filtered down to recent graduates? David Derksen and Lex Pott's Transience Mirrors popped up at Mint during London Design Festival. Kim Thome's Reflection Range was at the RCA Show in the Summer, followed closely by the the new Platform gallery in the Habitat store on King's Road and PAD London in October. A sure sign the boy will do well.

The same could be said for Dennis Parren's CYMK light (a special version was shown at IMM), which is racking up a huge following after exhibiting at Rossana Orlandi in Milan and Interieur Kortrijk. By the way, you can now order your own CYMK light directly on from Dennis' website.

Of the pieces we hadn't seen before, we lingered over the Dear Disaster cabinet by Jenny Ekdahl. With doors composed of 2000 veneered and painted discs, the concept is to allow the owner to create and re-shape an image, "creating a tactile and rhythmic interaction with ever-changing images and underlying meanings".

IMM Cologne has had mixed fortunes these last few years. From being THE big trade show to being eclipsed by Milan, a lot of work has gone into rejuvenating the show. That has been obvious over the last few years and certainly this year. The halls have been shuffled around, work has gone into curating the show (not just the stands - a tactic that works well for Interieur Kortrijk) and the concept house "Das Haus" which launched in 2012 returned under the guidance of Luca Nichetto.

It's probably safe to say, that "cosy" was probably the guiding principle behind Das Haus. Stuffed with books, plants, comfortable seating, textures and soft lighting, it was the type of Haus you would happily move into. Of course many of Nichetto's own designs featured, several of which were launched at IMM Cologne, but they were interspersed among works by Hans Wegner, the Bouroullecs, George Nelson and Dieter Rams. As an aside - it must be a confidence boost to any designer to see their work sitting happily alongside the great and the good of the design world.

The Scandinavian influence on Nichetto was obvious (he opened a second studio in Stockholm in 2011) through his choice of pieces from Skultuna, Iittala, Gallery Pascale, Artek. His new lounge chair Hai for One Nordic also previewed at the show.
Zeitraum made a bold and colourful statement at IMM Cologne this week with the launch of a major new colour stain programme. For the first time, the majority of the solid wood collection is available in 10 standard colours, in addition to the standard wood finishes, substantially expanding the possibilities.

The top image shows Kihyun Kim's 1.3 Chair in the new colours (which will be stained on oak) - chalk white, 5 grey tones and 4 trend colours. The idea is to bring colour into play, without hiding what Zeitraum is all about - WOOD! So a sophisticated staining technique was chosen to ensure the natural structure and grain of the wood is still visible.

The stain colours were developed with Formstelle, Zeitraum's long-standing design partner. Their inspiration came from the stages of exposed wood weathering naturally. Combined, they allow for an interesting depth effect or a bright spot of intense colour to create focus in a space.

The colours were shown on several new items, including E8 by London-based German designer Mathias Hahn. E8 is based on a post-war kitchen table that sat in Mathias' flat in Hackney, east London (hence the name - Hackney's postcode is E8). Long and narrow with extreme projections, it allowed the table to serve as a dining table and work surface at the same time. Perfect for city living. All surfaces apart from the top, are available in colour - a detail which underlines it's functional character. This is a table to be used and enjoyed - not covered with a tablecloth!
PELLE by Lorenz*Kaz was previewed at Interieur Kortrijk in October. The final production version is now ready. An homage to Scandinavian classics, Pelle sees a return to beech, a wood associated with the early days of Zeitraum, but not seen much in recent years. The combination of beech and saddle leather is particularly appealing. The leather seat hangs freely and is shaped by an aluminium inlay. This adds stability without losing any flexibility (or visual lightness).

Interieur comes but once every 2 years and that's probably a good thing. It means the standard of exhibitor is high, the standard of exhibition design is high and visitors are eager to see whats on offer. Splitting the show into 2 separate venues, as the organisers did this year, may not be such a good thing, but more of that later.

Interieur at Kortrijk is a chance for the Benelux designers and brands to flex their muscle. With a tendency to be more decorative than the Scandinavians, and quirkier than the Italians, the show has a unique feeling. It's immediately obvious there is a strong curatorial team in charge, with each hall linked by a central corridor, gently guiding you around. Rather than have a single guest of honour, several designers were invited to create installations and temporary cafes on the theme "Future Primitives" which interrupted the corridor. Makkink & Bey, Nendo and Muller Van Severen all created hugely different spaces.

One of the more attractive elements of Interieur is that space is given to design galleries, representing less commercial designers and "design-art". Carpenters Workshop Gallery, Galerie Greta Meert (showcasing works by Donald Judd), Valerie Traan (who represents Muller Van Severen amongst others) and Victor Hunt all had space within the main exhibition halls. After LDF, followed by PAD London and Frieze, it's good to see these different sides of the design industry can co-exist.
Less effective was the new Buda Island area in the city centre. A fleet of Audi cars in blue and pink Interieur livery carried you from one site to the other. The new zone focused on younger designers and brands and was almost a mini Zona Tortona. However, it felt isolated and had no interaction with the city around it. It may as well have been in an exhibition centre on the edge of town. However, the first time is always difficult, so we won't be too harsh. There were some definite highlights like the Troika ARCADES PROJECT, a site specific installation, and part of the Future Primitives programme, that created a cathedral of light.

It was also good to see Dennis Parren's CYMK light again (last seen tucked in a corner of Spazio Rossana Orlandi) and Vera, Chapter Two, a "must see" during LDF that we missed.

One strand that linked the two sites was the multitude of 3D printing. Long been mooted as the future of design, 3D printing or rapid proto-typing as it is also known, was by far the biggest trend on show. Stepping into the mainstream, it is not that difficult to envisage a day when a show like Interieur becomes an online only event and a visitor to the site can print out at home any of the designs that takes their fancy.
Sprawling across the city, in a way that once felt haphazard, it has now embraced zoning and is a better experience for the visitor as a result. Brompton Design District (including the V&A), Fitzrovia, Shoreditch Triangle.....all bite sized and easy to digest. Spend an afternoon in each and you don't come away feeling overwhelmed by the scale of the Festival.
venue, the former Royal Mail sorting office on New Oxford Street,
designjunction has mushroomed from its initial incarnation in 2011.
Visitors and exhibitors alike were staggered both by the scale of the
building and just how quickly designjunction has grown. Featuring top
quality pop up shops, flash factories, temporary bars and restaurants as
well as a high standard of trade exhibitors, we presented Young Sweden
and were delighted to be involved.
With the move to Battersea more or less complete, SHOW RCA has become a vast, sprawling event. 4 buildings in Battersea and 2 in Kensington Gore means you need your walking shoes on. The new Dyson Building is an impressive space, yet strangely empty, while the Design Products area felt a little hidden and cramped. There seemed to be several strange curatorial decisions with this years show, but perhaps that is simply a case of not being used to all this new space. Here are our Top 5 (in no particular order) from across the 2 venues:

Part of the team that made their own money in Milan, Sam Weller presented his own project Holdfast as part of Design Products. Inspired by the humble (but handy) workbench clamp, the metal elements for Holdfast are produced on a computer controlled machine and this single component can be used to form bookshelves, tables or stools.

Using his slightly odd but pleasingly home-made Thread Wrapping Machine, Anton Alvarez presented a whole series of objects, from stools, to benches to lights, all held together purely by glue coated thread. Each piece is unique as a result, a craft aesthetic with an industrial method.

Innovation Design Engineering projects had a decidedly social feel - simple ways to improve our communities and society. WaterBuoy is incredibly easy to install and communicates in a very simple, colourful way through "Droplets" how much water a household is consuming (and wasting!). Even though it may feel like it never stops raining, water is a scarce commodity and needs to be used with caution. WaterBuoy acts as a reminder each time we fill the kettle or run the washing machine and was a worthy winner of the Dyson Award.
Apart from their own projects, Stuart White and David Gibson collaborated on Sharing Bin, a closed network, ideal for creative places like art schools, where people can share the files in their computer's recycle bin. the idea is to encourage recycling and intellectual sharing. The item you have binned may not be the thing you needed, or may be obsolete in your work, but could be just the thing for someone else to spark their creativity. One mans rubbish is another mans gold.

There was quite a strong social and even political focus in this years show, with an impromptu cafe set up in Kensington where people could sit, chat and share ideas or listen to talks and also a BUY/TRADE shop, where graduates accepted offers in the form of money or services for their work. A piece of art or design in exchange for some advice on setting up your own practise perhaps?
The political dimension came from Minjae Huh and the Future Without PSW project, protesting the governments decision to scrap Post-Study Work visas, which in effect means all students, who will have paid substantial fees to study in the UK, have to leave within 2 months of graduating. To support the protest, Minjae kindly pre-printed postcards addressed to Damian Green MP. Are we seeing the start of a new overt political activism in our colleges?
As part of our cultural detours yesterday, we stopped by the recently opened Heatherwick Studio retrospective at the V&A Museum. Designed, presumably, to provide a sense of the working studio environment, it was full to the brim of models, details, prototypes, videos of everything from Doha desert hotel complexes to Christmas cards. A little too much on display, to be honest (something we heard from several other visitors) but once you get lost in the detail, it was fascinating to see the enormous range of projects the studio undertakes.

The Wellcome commission came after construction of the building on the Euston Road was complete, so the challenge was to design something that would fit through a standard door. Heatherwick went one further, creating a 30 metre high chandelier that could fit through a letter box. 142,000 glass spheres were threaded onto 27,000 steel cables by 3 teams, working 24 hours a day for 4 months. The result is Bleigiessen and can be viewed at the Wellcome trust on the last Friday of every month at 2pm.
Here's a handy hint - the studio have vowed that every Friday at 2pm, someone from the studio will be on hand to demonstrate the working models, including the 7 metre retractable bridge. This years commission used the blueprints for the 11 preceding pavilions as its foundations. Digging down to ground water level, as opposed to building a standard structure above ground, and then lining everything in cork, it has the appearance of an archaeological excavation. The mushroom shaped cork stools feel monumental, as if they were hewn out of the rock. Cool and calm, the experience is in stark contrast to the bright red Jean Nouvel pavilion of 2010.
